Search Engine Optimization
What is SEO
A website without visitors might as well not exist. Search engine optimization (SEO) is a set of strategies and methods to increase traffic to a site “organically” (meaning through natural or unpaid search results), by considering how search engines work and what people search for.
Search Engine Ranking
SEO is, in simple terms, the process of increasing visibility of your website in search engines (ex. Google, Bing, Yahoo) by applying techniques which attempt to increase the ranking of your website (closer to the top of the page’s listings).
Web presence
To increase web “presence”, a robust SEO effort targets several different kinds of search, such as local search, image search, video search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.
Good and Bad SEO
There are “white hat” and “black hat” techniques. {fts-vars}Company-nickname{/fts-vars} only uses “white hat” techniques, which search engines consider “appropriate”.
Beware of developers who guarantee you’ll rank in the top 5. Oftentimes, they’ll employ “black hat” methods called “spamdexing”, which utilize spamming methods such as link farms, keyword stuffing and article spinning. Search engines look for such techniques and will flag your site as “inappropriate”, resulting in your website being removed from their indices (bad… very bad).
Good SEO = more traffic
The bottom-line: the higher up in the rankings and the more frequently your website appears in a search results list, the more likely the person searching will click through to your website (i.e. traffic).
